History:
Near Sula is a sacred "medicine tree," with a ram's horn embedded in its side; explanations of how it got there are the source of many Indian legends.
Visit the State Capitol in Helena to see the famous Charlie Russell painting which hangs behind the speaker's desk in the House of Representatives chamber that depicts Lewis and Clark's meeting with the Flatheads at Ross Hole in September 1805.
The Big Hole Valley and Big Hole National Battlefield are to the southeast on MT 43, across the Continental Divide. Lolo and Missoula are to the north on US 93, while the Bitterroot Range of mountains cover the horizon to the west. Wildlife, scenery and history line the highway. The Bitterroot and Lolo National Forests are to the east of US 93. Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge and Fort Owen are about 55 miles north of Sula.
